Ok, so you’ve made the decision to improve your health, but you know you need some outside help. SAWEET! That's great! But where do you even begin? EVERYONE seems to be an expert coach and offering their services. There are a few things to consider before moving forward...

The first thing you need to ask yourself is what exactly do you want for yourself? Do you want to focus on your diet, exercise, or both? Are you getting in shape for something specific (wedding, marathon, etc) or is this an overall lifestyle change? Do you want something specific to you or are you fine with a general fitness and nutrition plan?

Would you like your coach to be accessible in person and have that face to face interaction? Or are you comfortable with having an online coach?

In Person vs. Online

Choosing between an in-person coach versus online really comes down to how disciplined you are. Someone in person can see more clearly your progress and can really work with you on your form (i.e. lifting).

It is also harder to lie to someone about staying track when they’re standing in front of you rather than through a text…

Oh, you don’t think you’ll ever get off track and won’t want to lie to your coach about it? Good one.

If your coach is online, you need to make sure that you are good with communicating openly and HONESTLY to them about what you are experiencing. Any diet and lifting issues, your mental and emotional health, all need to be expressed clearly to them. You have to be open with your progress by sending them pictures and videos so that they can properly advise you. You will only be hurting yourself if you are not 100% honest with them.

"You will only be hurting yourself if you are not 100% honest with them."

So now that you’ve decided the type of coach you want and what specifically you’d like from them, it’s time to go over HOW you find them!

In-Person Coach

If you’d like an in-person coach, I would start by joining a local gym and scheduling a consultation with the trainers there. Keep in mind that every trainer is different and have different approaches. Even the difference between the coach being male or female can make a world of difference. Just because you didn’t like one trainer, doesn’t mean all the trainers there are like that so I encourage you to try a few different ones before moving forward.

Online Coach

Finding an online coach can be both easier and more difficult. There are SO MANY different people on Instagram claiming to be fitness experts. Here are a couple red flags to avoid:

Coach Morgan and I in Pittsburgh, PA

They promise results and results fast.

  • No one can promise that they will be able to provide you the results you want. Again, everybody is different, every approach is different, and it take time to actually see results period. And these results may end up not being what you originally wanted! Anyone who is offering you fast results is lying to you. If Susie Q is saying she can do XYZ in 6 weeks, she’s lying. Run, Forrest, run away. Any sustaining results TAKE TIME and there is no guarantee how long it’ll take. An authentic coach knows this and should never be promising a timeline.

They insist that you need to take supplements.

  • This is a huge no-no in my book. I will expand on this in the future, but no one NEEDS supplements to see results. Supplements are products that can help progress, but they are not necessary. If a coach is pushing supplements, most-likely they are trying to make more money off you.

"If a coach is pushing supplements, most-likely they are trying to make more money off you."

When looking for a coach, you not only need to be able to successfully communicate with them, but also feel that they have your best interest at heart. Do they have the same morals as you? Do you like what they stand for and what they do in their personal life? If you see someone on Instagram you may want to hire, I would suggest seeing the types of things they do in their spare time. See how they interact with others and ASK CURRENT CLIENTS THEIR OPINION. Find out how exactly this person operates and what clients really think of them. Anyone can manipulate client results with edited pictures and angles, so going directly to the source is crucial.

Choosing My Own Coach

I was very cautious before choosing my coach. I had been manipulated in the past by not only coaches in person, but online coaches who just sent generic cookie-cutter programs and then disappeared. I also needed a coach that I could trust especially with handling my history of eating disorders. For two years I followed my coach so I felt I had a really good idea of how genuine she was. She was thoughtful, inspiring, driven, and a Christian. All things that I consider to be extremely important in a coach. She also provided diet and fitness plans that were specific to ME and MY goals.

Make a List. Check it Twice.

I very much suggest making a list of things that you know you 100% need from your coach. This is such an important relationship so take your time! You may even start with a coach and decide to switch. That's ok! I cannot iterate enough how much of a difference a good coach can make.

So raise your chardonnay, my little goal-getters...

...Here's to Health. Cheers.
